A pop-up said your computer was infected, or someone called claiming to be from your bank, broadband provider or Microsoft, and you let them onto your computer. It happens to careful people every day. Here’s what to do.
Right now
- Disconnect the computer from the internet.
- Call your bank on the number on the back of your card, using a different phone.
- Don’t give the caller any more information, and don’t call them back.
- Bring the computer in.
What we do
- Remove remote access tools such as AnyDesk and TeamViewer that were installed
- Scan for malware, password stealers and new user accounts
- Change and secure your email, banking and key account passwords
- Turn on two-step login
- Check your browser for saved passwords and card details
- Explain how to report the scam
Questions we get asked
Will I lose my files?
No. We clean the computer without wiping it, unless we find something that makes a reinstall the safer option. We will discuss that with you first.
How do I spot the next one?
Microsoft, banks and broadband companies never phone to say your computer is infected, or ask you to install remote access software.
